Twelve Houses

The First House

Sign of Aries Ruling Planet Mars

It is the FRONT DOOR through which all daily experience enters the life of
the native. It has to do with the native's personal appearance and especially
the casual impression he creates on superficial contact. In every sense this
should be called the native's personality, since this is what shows on the
surface. The nature of the first house shows how the native APPEARS TO OTHERS.

To ARIES as the sign of spring, the beginning of a new cycle of growth, is the
natural sign of the first house. The elemental makeup of Aries is FIRE,
describing its spirit, and its position is CARDINAL, referring to leadership.
Aries is very strong on individuality and a "me first" attitude. Aries is
courageous, nervy, pushy, determined, aggressive, resourceful and
competitive.Aries is also vain, conceited, opinionated, domineering, impulsive
and defensive.

MARS, the natural ruler of Aries, is the planet of INITIATING FORCE. It is the
natural energizer in the horoscope. It takes the spirit of Mars to put all the
Aries qualities into action. Like Aries, Mars flares up but fizzles out. It does
not sustain a constant output of high-voltage energy but generally acts as a
trigger or impulser. It is the planet most associated with sex as a physical and
biological passion. It is both creative and destructive.

The Second House
Sign of Taurus Ruling Planet Venus
The second house of the horoscope is concerned with the nature of supply and
resources. This is the money house in terms of earnings and what the
native acquires through his own labors. It also includes possessions and
so-called portable property.
TAURUS is the natural accountant of the zodiac, and it is fitting that Taurus should preside over resources and possessions. Taurus is steady and dependable
and enjoys looking after all the comforts that make life easier, more
pleasurable and satisfying.

VENUS is the natural ruler of Taurus. Venus is the SENTIMENT OF LOVE AND
AFFECTION, conservation and comfort. It is known as the lesser benefic.
Jupiter of abundance is the greater benefic. Venus is a force that beautifies
and makes life attractive and comfortable and smooths over the rough spots. It
has a certain fixation and earthy attachment which adjusts or covers over
anything that is displeasing or unattractive.

The Third House
Sign of Gemini Ruling Planet Mercury
The third house is the house of communication. It rules the instrumentalities
of thought such as the native's tools for thinking and his thought patterns in
general.

The sign of GEMINI, the messenger, is the natural ruler of the third house. The
element of Gemini is AIR and its disposition is MUTABLE (changeable, flexible,
and adaptable). Gemini is a mental sign and exhibits a certain surface
brilliance. It is said to be alert, suggestive of intellect; to grasp things
quickly; to be able to communicate on all levels and switch from one subject to
another with ease; to seem to know something about everything; to have a
fondness for talking and exchange of news and views.

The planet Mercury is the natural ruler of Gemini, and mental Mercury suits it
perfectly. Mercury is said to be the quality of the "mind." Mind in this
sense is considered the reflector of the inner man, so Mercury is a mirror or
messenger for another (the self). Natives with a fortunate Mercury are very
persuasive and easily draw attention to themselves for their apparent brilliance
and ease of expression. They may not be saying anything very profound, but it
sounds good.

The Fourth House
Sign of Cancer Ruling Planet Moon

The fourth house is one of the four angles of the horoscope. These cardinal
points, as they are called, are considered leading and prominent. Natives with
heavy concentrations of planets in any of the four angular houses are destined
to influence their fellow men in some way. The fourth house is a subjective
area. It is concerned with the home, basic security, the parental influence (the
mother or the parent most motherly), early upbringing, background, heritage, and
it describes the general conditions at the end of life.

CANCER is the symbol of protection, the natural ruler of the fourth house. Its
element is WATER (emotionally fluid) and its position is CARDINAL (a leading
influence). Cancer is the maternal sign and its dominant characteristic is
motherly (even in men). Cancer possesses great sensitivity, intuition and
a native talent for timing, rhythm and harmony.

The mysterious and feminine Moon is the ruler of Cancer. It gives sensitivity,
intuition and understanding, but it also gives moods, cycles and unstable
attitudes. It is perhaps somewhat odd that the most unstable and changeable
planetary force is the natural ruler of our holiest of holies—the
fundamentals of our security. Perhaps there is a good reason for this. Perhaps
we associate too much fixed security thinking with matters of the fourth house.

The Fifth House
Sign of Leo Ruling Planet Sun

The fifth house is the house of creative self-expression. It also has to do
with pleasures, speculation, taking a chance and making romantic love.
IF YOU ARE GOING TO GAMBLE AND WIN, YOU HAD BETTER HAVE A GOOD FIFTH HOUSE:
OTHERWISE YOU ARE GAMBLING TO LOSE.If the house is occupied with one or more
planets, then the native has a natural interest and/or problems connected with
all fifth-house matters. One cannot have a poor fifth-house condition and enjoy
some fifth-house matters and not others. All these matters are related in some
way and a poor fifth house is reflected in all related matters.
LEO the king of beasts is the natural ruler of the fifth house. His element is
FIRE (in spirit), and his position is FIXED (unyielding and determined). Leo is
the symbol of the king, and it takes all the self-assurance in the world to feel
really creative, grand and noble.

The Sun as the supreme ego is the natural ruler of the fifth house. It feels
most at home in this freedom-and pleasure-seeking area, where speculations and
gamble are the order of the day. The ego Sun can really shine when all its
children look up to it as a respected father image, and at the same time it is
unlimited in its generosity to indulge and delight all those who flatter its
vanity and support its ego.
The Sixth House

Sign of Virgo Ruling Planet Mercury
The sixth house is the house of responsibility. It represents duty, service,
obligations and a sense of indebtedness that either the native owes to others or
others owe to him. Thus it is the house of servants and employees and also the
native's own role as servant or employee.

The sign of VIRGO, the virgin, is the natural ruler of the sixth house. Her
element is EARTH (and physical ties) and her position is MUTABLE (supports
another or exists only to lend herself to others). Virgo natives are very
exacting, precise and detailed. They take great pains with all

their undertakings and expect others to do the same. While Virgos are keyed to
serving others in some way, they are also very demanding in the quality of
service that is due to them.

Mercury, at the moment, is considered the natural ruler of Virgo. However, it is
felt that an undiscovered planet is probably more closely related to the
exacting nature of Virgo than the mercurial Mercury. Mercury as a mental
reflection of a more forceful guiding principle fits Virgo (and the sixth house)
well.

The Seventh House
Sign of Libra Ruling Planet Venus

The seventh house is the house of other people in the way they relate to the
native. Or, more exactly, in the way in which the native sees others. While the
first house represents HOW THE NATIVE APPEARS TO OTHERS and the fourth house HOW
THE NATIVE SEES HIMSELF, the seventh house represents HOW OTHERS APPEAR TO THE
NATIVE. The seventh house represents the general nature of the native's outlook
on the world. It represents partnerships of all kinds—marriage, business, etc.

The sign of LIBRA, the balance, is the natural sign of the seventh house. Its
element is AIR (based on ideas, ideals and concepts) and its position is
cardinal (dominating). Libra is always concerned with other people. It is the
most social sign of the zodiac. While usually friendly, gracious and
hospitable, Libra can also be argumentive, threatening and revengeful.

VENUS, the social planet, is said to be the natural ruler of Libra and the
seventh house. All the general qualities of Venus (beauty, comforts,
feelings of satisfaction, general inducements toward goodwill and emotional
rapport) fit well with most of Libra's qualities.

The Eighth House

Sign of Scorpio Ruling Planet Pluto

Here we come to one of the mystery areas of the horoscope, which is generally
misunderstood by most people, including astrologers. This is probably because of
an unpleasant side to all three factors (the eighth house, Scorpio and Pluto),
which frightens some people.

First, the eighth house represents a point in time or space where some
significant transition or mutation takes place. It therefore represents some
crisis or catastrophic event or happening, where one form of something stops or
dies and another takes over. This can be a form of rebirth or a devastating
revelation to the native. It can be triggered by an event or it can come from
within. The eighth house is known as the house of death, and it generally
describes the nature of the native's death. But it also describes important
changes in the native's life and his reaction to them.

SCORPIO is the natural ruler of the eighth house. Its element is emotional and
its position FIXED (rigidly concentrated). Almost everything about Scorpio is
hidden and secretive, and Scorpio wants everything to remain that way as
far as his own affairs are concerned. On the other hand, Scorpio has a naive
curiosity about the intimate affairs of everyone else. There is a strong sexual
character to most of Scorpios' motivations, although they would be the last to
admit it to themselves.
PLUTO, a planet discovery of only recent times, is now considered the real ruler
of Scorpio. Pluto's inner nature fits perfectly the dual aspect of Scorpio
(before and after change). Before the discovery of Pluto in 1930, Mars the
warmaker was considered the ruler of Scorpio. The Mars quality fits perfectly the simple directness of Aries but does not begin to
describe fully the limitless depths of the Scorpio nature, half of which is
always hidden under the surface.

The Ninth House

Sign of Sagittarius Ruling Planet Jupiter

The ninth house is the house of higher learning. It represents the point at
which many thoughts are gathered together and codified into one cause or
principle. Thus laws and religions and philosophies are created, as well as all
sorts of principles, which in essence represent the thinking of many minds. If
the third house is the individual mind, the ninth house is the collective mind
after it has been organized.

SAGITTARIUS, the archer, is the natural sign of the ninth house. His element is
MENTAL and his position is MUTABLE and yielding. He symbolizes the spirit of the
law rather than the law itself. Sagittarians are naturally optimistic,
enthusiastic, positive, self-ordained for their mission,

dedicated to their cause, generally unselfish in their ambition, pure in heart,
devotedly loyal, and sustained by faith in the desirability of their cause. They
are useful in all expressions of higher learning, law, religion, philosophy and
politics.

JUPITER, the symbol of abundance, is the natural ruler of Sagittarius and the
ninth house. Its force is expansion, favors, rewards, honors and a "green light"
for more of the same. It generally bestows a feeling of good fortune. As
abundance, however, it also leads to overconsumption, overflow and contents that
outgrow their form or container. You can have too much of a good thing. The
presence of Jupiter anywhere in the horoscope is benevolent, comforting and
proof both material and spiritual of the essential right-ness of things.

The Tenth House

Sign of Capricorn Ruling Planet Saturn

The tenth house shows the native's conscious ambitions and the material and
physical judgment generally imposed on him by the world. It is not the final
answer, but it does indicate how the native's life will generally turn out in
the eyes of the world. As the conscious goal of the native, the tenth
house gathers, solidifies and channels the native's best efforts or the real
substance of his inner convictions.

CAPRICORN, the disciplinarian, is the natural ruler of the tenth house. The
element is MATERIAL and physical, and the position is CARDINAL and leading.
Capricorns always have their eye on the big chance, which they pursue to the
bitter end. Thus Capricorns tend to win ultimately, not

through superior talents, but by their persistence. This attitude undoubtedly
accounts for more material success in life than any other combination of
talents.

SATURN, the taskmaster, is the natural ruler of Capricorn and the tenth house.
The power of Saturn is to boil things down to their bare essentials and then
build slowly up from there. Saturn stresses facts, figures, measurements, care,
order, discipline, economy, thrift, logic, common sense and TRUTH. People
generally dislike the transit passage of Saturn in their horoscope because it
brings them down to earth and exposes the truth about what they are doing.

The Eleventh House

Sign of Aquarius Ruling Planet Uranus

The eleventh house is the area of honors usually attendant on, or resulting
from, tenth-house prominence or judgment. The eleventh is also the house of
friendships and hopes and wishes (as opposed to conscious personal goals). The
hopes and wishes of the eleventh house are more in the

nature of fond desires that are shared and enjoyed in the company of others.

AQUARIUS, the freedom seeker, is the natural ruler of the eleventh house. Its
element is IDEALISTIC and its position is FIXED and concentrated. Actually
Aquarians always seem to stand out from the crowd, even though they consider
themselves closely involved with group interests. They

seem to have some sort of communication (mental or emotional sympathy) that
transcends usual ties and therefore gives them a special application of
brotherly love.

URANUS, the unpredictable, is the natural ruler of Aquarius and the eleventh
house. Uranus is the only planetary force that can dislodge the death grip of
Saturn. The essence of Uranus is its erratic behavior. Its virtue and its vice
is its talent for sudden and unexpected deviations from any system of
regularity. This deviation is upsetting to those who are unprepared for it. But
it is only through such "breaks in pattern" that new angles of insight are
created, which eventually make possible changes and improvements.

The Twelfth House

Sign of Pisces Ruling Planet Neptune

The twelfth house is the key to everything that has gone before. It is the
accumulated (subconscious, which abstracts meaning from the past and builds a
foundation into the future. It is the residuum of ultimate values. The twelfth
house is the end of the road where we find ourselves after having passed through
all the other phases of living. As the end of everything (prior to suggesting a
new beginning in another cycle) it holds the secrets of life and the hidden or
subconscious motivations of any life that may follow. It also holds the secrets
of past lives that may have preceded this one. Obviously, it is the
least-understood area of the horoscope and, understandably, the area most
frightening to ordinary mortals.

PISCES, the symbol of universal understanding, is the natural sign of the
twelfth house. Its element is EMOTIONAL, and its position is MUTABLE and
forgiving. Its character gathers from the past and blends with the future. The
quality is spiritual and immaterial. The form is vague and extended. The
strength of Pisces is based on spiritual faith, while the Sagittarian faith is
more of an emotional conviction. Pisces resists rational applications as such.
Pisceans are often able to carry on in spite of all material obstacles. They
always see beyond, behind and underneath what

others are pointing at.

NEPTUNE is the natural ruler of Pisces and the twelfth house. Because Neptune is
completely immaterial, its presence or effect can be deceiving. This leaves open
the opportunity for people to attribute to Neptune what they want to see. There
is no guarantee who is right and who is wrong. The effect of Neptune is to
suggest and then fade away. It is up to the one who has received the
"revelation" to fit the pieces together and supply his own interpretation.

A SUMMARY OF THE TWELVE HOUSES

A SUMMARY OF THE TWELVE HOUSES
The Twelve houses of the horoscope define twelve areas of our life. The
beginning of each of the houses is called the cusp. Each house has what
is called a natural sign and natural ruling planets. This is the sign and
planet which are associated with that house in the natural chart beginning with
Aries and ending with Pisces.

The Astrodienst charts show another division of the houses. This division
places the houses in groups that are on the angles, the angular (ang); houses
that follow immediately behind each angular house, the succedent (suc) houses,
and the third in line, the cadent (cad) houses. There are four each, angular,
succedent, and cadent houses. Older books taught that planets in the angular
houses were somewhat stronger and planets in the cadent houses were weaker in
influence. Now little attention is paid to this idea.

Here are listed the twelve houses with the rulerships, classification and a

More about Afflicted Planet

There are a variety of ways a planet may be afflicted. Being afflicted means that a planet has difficulty in acting its nature in a way that reflects it higher or "good side".A planet may be afflicted by sign. For example Mars is afflicted in both Libra and in Cancer. The basic way affliction is determined is this. The sign that is opposite the one that the planet rules is a position of affliction. One of the two signs that are square two the planets sign of rulership is also afflicted. Mars is afflicted in Cancer which is square (90 deg) from Aries. (I will only note what appears to be a contradiction that Mars is exhalted (very good) in Capricorn which Aries also squares) and this must be saved for another time.
A planet may be afflicted by bad aspect to one of more planets by aspect. 45deg, 90deg, 135deg, 150deg. or 180deg or by conjunction. A few conjunctions are good but perhaps most are difficult, and therfore afflictions.
A planet may be accidentally afflicted by being in the house that is opposite the house that the planet rules in the Aries in the first template. Mars in the 7th. Mars in the 4th is also an affliction.
A planet is afflicted if it is in retrograde motion.
A planet is afflicted if it lies in the 12th house except for Neptune which essentially rules the 12th or Venus which is exalted in the 12th or in Pisces.
As you see there are many ways for a planet to be afflicted. If a planet is retrograde, afflicted by aspect and in a sign that afflicts (three testimonies to affliction) there will be great distress over the area of life that the planet, sign and house rule in the life. However good aspects can negate much of the trouble if they are sufficent in number and strength. If an afflicted planet is in mutal reception with another planet that is not afflicted much help can come from this.In closing I am the founder of a totaly free Astrological site "The Astrologers Forum" in which discussions are held. Readers may look in with out having to join if you wish.

Afflicted Planet

What is the difference between a weak and afflicted planet as far as significations go? Answer: A weak planet is unable to protect /promote its significations. The weak planet also causes delays. If an afflicted planet is strong it gives some tension as per the level of affliction and nature of the afflicting planet. If an afflicted planet is weak the significations of such a weak planet are damaged and lost. Will a strong afflicted planet cause less harm than a weak afflicted? Answer: Certainly, yes. Do functional malefic planets, when not causing afflictions in the chart, never cause any harm? Answer: In their sub periods they cause some tension to the person with the significations of the houses occupied and aspected.Afflicted means- Unfavorably aspected. Loosely applied to: (a) any inharmonious aspect to a planet, or (b) to any aspect, particularly the conjunction, parallel, square or opposition, to a malefic planet. Also by some authorities applied to a mundane or zodiacal parallel with, or when, besieged by both Infortunes (q.v.). Some authorities consider that the sensitive degree on any House cusp can be afflicted, though any such consideration must be confined to instances where the birth-moment is known to a certainty. a planet in a sign contrary to it's nature, as Moon in Capricorn or Scorpio; Mars in Libra, Taurus or Cancer; or Venus in Aries, Virgo or Scorpio; OR with a hard aspect from Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or PlutoAn afflicted Sun has the reverse of the above qualities, such as arrogance, attention-seeking, insecurity, lack of confidence, and a shaky sense of identity. Poor health and a lack of vitality can also be manifestations of anUnfavorably aspected. In affliction with. Mercury afflicted indicates that the stock markets all over the world will be in recession. Sun afflicted shows that the great politicians of this world will not have mental peace. When Mars is "afflicted" or has many conflicts in a birth chart, it can lead to repressing the vital fire within. But not to be denied, a stifled Mars will eventually erupt, and emerge through temper tantrums or just a lowgrade, but constant irritability. All Mars asks is to be channeled and given an outlet. When your own Mars nature is understood, it's easier to master. It guides you toward making the most of your potential through the use of your own natural assertiveness. An afflicted Sun has the reverse of the above qualities, such as arrogance, attention-seeking, insecurity, lack of confidence, and a shaky sense of identity. Poor health and a lack of vitality can also be manifestations of an afflicted Sun.A planet is impedited (impeded) in its natural action when afflicted, especially by malefics, or is in a general state of weakness due to position or lack of dignity. Particularly applies to the Moon, when afflicted by Sun, Mars or Saturn.RegardsJ.s.sandhu

Retrograde Planets

All about Retrograde Planets

...to the Retrograde Planet Calendar

When you hear RETROGRADE, you may panic, even just a bit. You may have heard of bad omens connected with times of Retrograde and the first thing you may think is: potential for problems and limited progress. Retrogrades happen only from the perspective of Earth (called Geocentric). From the Sun's perspective (called Heliocentric), there are no Retrogrades, the planets continuously move in their orbits around the Sun. But from our perspective on
the Earth, planets sometimes APPEAR to be going backwards. It's a sensory illusion, much like what happens when you're moving slowly in a train or car and another train or car going slower seems to be going backwards. From our perspective, the other planet seems to slow in its orbit. Right before a planet makes a Retrograde station (the point where it Retrogrades), it is at its
farthest point in its orbit from the Earth. What actually happens when a planet Retrogrades is that it comes back closer to the Earth (and opposes the Sun).

Astrologically, Retrogrades happen when planets, and the energy they represent, are too far out and need to come back in line with the Earth. This is when you need to slow it down. You may need to take 1 step back now to take 2 steps forward later, and during a Retrograde, slowing down can be ultimately more productive and profitable than pushing on relentlessly ahead. When Retrogrades happen, things need to change, minds change, information changes,
and people with Retrograde planets in their charts are here to create change and increase consciousness here on Earth. When you have Retrograde planets in your chart, people may not see you in your true glory, there's more to you than meets the eye.

Mercury Retrograde
Mercury Retrogrades three times a year for three weeks each time. This is the time your
thinking needs to come back in line with reality. If there's too much information coming in and you're thinking a few steps too far ahead, Mercury Retrograde is a time to process, digest, and organize what you've learned recently so you can understand what's going on and find ways to put what you know to good use. Review your ideas, edit your statements, write in your
journal. This is a good time to figure things out, see things from a more internal perspective, and decide how to proceed so you can work and communicate more effectively.

Venus Retrograde

Retrograde Venus calls your values into question. You may have acquired new possessions or made more money recently, but what do you want to do with your wealth, your talents, your assets??? Your attractions may have drawn many potential friends and lovers, but who do you want in your life and how do you want to share? During Venus Retrograde you may get a better view of yourself by observing how you relate to others.

Mars Retrograde
When Mars is retrograde, you may need to slow down. But to do that, you may find yourself face to face with--- yourself. The urge to get what you want may be strong, but instead of rushing out to get what you want when you want it, you may need to take another look at what you're pursuing and how you're pursuing it. Is it really in line with what you want or is it an unhealthy competition that has you running in circles? Action is necessary, but what kind? You can can bring your desires in line with what you really want and gain more personal power if you learn to control your needs and master your energy by taking action only when and where needed. If you can bring your own burning agenda back in line with others, you may be able to deepen your intimate relationships and re-energize yourself.

Jupiter Retrograde
When Jupiter is Retrograde, expansion can become impeded and things that seemed sure can just stop. When external energy dries up, it's time to find inner wisdom and expand internal knowledge. This is the time to objectively look at your projects and see where you need to work harder and do more. Don't just sit there criticizing others, examine your own code of ethics
and exercise your own integrity. Think about how much you do to *fit in* out of fear and what are truly your own goals and needs. Jupiter retrograde is when the things we think we need but aren't really adding to our growth, are somehow removed from our lives. The end result is beneficial and the quest to understand is the journey and the teaching.

Saturn Retrograde
Upsets and delays could become a normal part of life for the 4 and a half months Saturn is Retrograde. Extra time-consuming, unfinished *business* can unexpectedly come up that takes you away from your normal routine, adding extra responsibilities, commitments, and time-eaters to your days. Expectations of forward progress may have to be temporarily revised. It's
time to ease up and take a good look around you. Whatever house of your horoscope Saturn is currently transiting through is where you will feel this effect. This is not the time to make bold new strides and start experimental projects. Instead, use this time to re-evaluate and strengthen what you are already doing. This retrograde can teach you new methods to structure your inner psychological workings by exposing your limiting, unproductive defense mechanisms. This knowledge can ultimately help you translate yourself and your work to the world in a lucid, more easily comprehensible way.

Top of page.

Uranus Retrograde
Uranus Retrograde is the time to tap into your innermost creative thoughts. There is a rich source of experimental new ideas, ready to be tested in the world. Find the method and media best suited to express your brand of genius or retrograding Uranus can make you feel anxious and uneasy. Start planning your personal quest for freedom and independence now.

Neptune Retrograde
Retrograde Neptune is a time when the boundaries between reality and illusion get blurry and the energy of the dream life becomes larger than real life. Since the dreams are so close you
can touch them, use this time to delve into your dreams -- keep a dream diary in the medium of your choice. Your dreams are speaking louder and clearer than the usual murky surreal dream state. Listen to your intuitions, court your muse, and seek inspiration. While the energy is so transcendant, stay extra aware of your boundaries and borders.

Pluto Retrograde

The search for inner truth can be relentless during Pluto retrograde, but the deeper you can lean into it, the more compassion you'll be able to find for yourself and the further into self-knowledge and liberation this cycle will take you. Retrograding Pluto demands we purge whatever it touches (check your natal chart and all transits and progressions to see where Pluto effects you
personally). The loss or empty space created can be disorienting, and this is how Pluto tests our ability to stay true to our path.

Astrology, Marriage, and Sexual Compatibility

- Article by Mohan Potukuchi

"Marriages are made in heaven", is a well-known saying. So too can be said,"Divorces happen in hell". The fabric of Indian society weaves itself strongly around the well-established and time-tested institution of marriage built upon a well-thought of procedure and societal sanction. It is as rigorous as any ISO certification. "Once married, married for life", is the slogan or motto of Indian society. It is very strongly believed and rightly so, that marriage between a man and a woman approved by law, is not just a civil and social contract between two people but is also a union of two different families and their harmonious relationship into the future.
The starting point before a boy's family 'sees' a girl of similar status for mutual agreeability to the marriage proposal is the involvement of an astrologer for judging the astrological 'matching' or compatibility of horoscopes. In the so-called 'love marriages', this aspect is of no significance and hence, only a suitable 'muhurta' as per electional astrology is fixed (if required) for the marriage ceremony performance. That the ancient Hindus had devised a method to judge the marriage compatibility of the bride and bridegroom in all aspects - physical, mental, spiritual and biological - speaks immensely of their foresight, insights and skills in social architecture.
As soon as a 'middleperson' brings up a likely 'match', the families refer the horoscopes of the boy and the girl to their astrologers for their astrological examination with regard to compatibility, commonly known as 'matching'. There are three main factors to be considered:
1. The longevity of the boy and the girl
2. The strength of the 7th and the 8th houses
3. Agreeability of 12 factors or 'Koota Milan'
The seventh house in a horoscope pertains to one's partner. If Venus and Mars are in the 7th, the boy or the girl will have strong biological urges and so, such a person should be married to a similar one for compatibility. Judgement of longevity requires expertise and novices should not even attempt it. Once the minimum requirement of agreeability is achieved, the astrologer gives the go-ahead to the family, otherwise, he suggests skipping the proposal.
In 'Koota Milan', twelve (12) factors of matching are considered. The sixteen 'Kootas' are Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree-Deergha, Varna, Vasya, Graha-Maitri, Yoni, Rasi, Rajju, Vedha, and Nadi. Of them, the most important are Yoni, Rajju and Nadi. The maximum 'marks' or units of agreement are 36 (thirty-six) and a minimum of 18 (eighteen) are considered essential apart from the satisfactory matching of Yoni (sex), Rajju (duration of married life) and Nadi (physiological temperament). For the matching process, only the birth stars of the boy and the girl are needed. There are 27 (twenty-seven) 'nakshatras' or constellations in Indian astrology, not counting 'Abhijit'. Each 'nakshatra' is sub-divided into four 'padas' or quarters. The constellation in which the moon happens to reside at a given moment is the ruling star of the moment. The one at the time of birth is the birth star. Some astrologers attach greater importance to 'Graha-Maitri' or friendship between the lords of the 'Janma Rasis' (sign of the moon in the horoscopes) since this determines the psychological dispositions of the couple. Some exceptions are also provided as otherwise marriages would not take place at all!
What happens if the 'Janma Rasis' and/or the 'Janma Nakshatras' of the couple are the same ? The commonly accepted verdict of the ancient Indian astrologers and sages, in case the 'Janma Rasis' are same, is that the boy's birth star should precede the girl's. In case the 'Janma Nakshatras' of the couple happen to be the same, they should belong to different 'Padas' (quarters). It is essential to avoid the match if the common star is one among Bharani, Aslesha, Swati, Jyesta, Moola, Dhanista, Satabhisha or Poorvabhadra. If, however, the common birth star relates to two different 'rasis' (signs), and the 'Pada' of the girl relates to the preceding sign, it is acceptable. In case, the common birth star belongs to two signs equally (Mrigasira, Chitta etc.), the 'Pada' of the boy should relate to the preceding sign. Some more exceptions have been laid down to make allowances for matching if there is a strong demand for the alliance. However, the honest and sincere astrologer should put forth his objections without any bias.
'Kuja Dosham' or 'Mangalik' is one major obstacle to marriages in India. This arises due to certain placements of Mars ('kuja' or 'mangal' or 'angaraka') in a horoscope with respect to the Ascendent, the Moon, and Venus. Certainly, this 'dosh' or evil is dreaded by any father, particularly, of a girl! Mars in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or the 12th house causes this incompatibility. There are two flaws committed by most astrologers. One is to reckon the position of Mars in the 'Rasi' (sign) and not the 'Bhava' (house) while the other is to ignore to ascertain whether this 'dosh' exists from the Moon and Venus. The evil is stronger if it is from Venus, less stronger from the Moon, and least from the 'Lagna' (Ascendent). Further, not every position of the above-mentioned five placements will endanger the life of the spouse. The 2nd house signifies family, the 4th happiness, the 7th spouse, the 8th longevity, and the 12th pleasures of the bed. 'Kuja Dosh' gets annulled if it is present in both the horoscopes. There are several other exceptions which have to be carefully considered before declaring incompatibility of the horoscopes.
The Western astrologer can greatly benefit from a deeper understanding and application of the methods of compatibility adopted by his Indian counter-part and save the great number of disastrous marriages in the West which has an inerasable effect on the unfortunate off-springs of such marriages. Of course, the new Indian generation has started emulating the undesirable pre-mature practices of the West. They will do good to themselves and the nation if they try to fathom the time-tested value system of India and avoid the pitfalls of the Western society.

Astrology and Human Life

- Article by Shiva Kartikeyan
1.Astrology and its Influence on Human Life Astrology can be defined as “the study of the real or supposed relationship between the Heavens and the people on the earth”. It is, in fact, the science of divination, which calculates the supposed influence of planets upon human affairs and aims at foretelling the events on the earth by their movements, Postions and aspects. In simple words, it is the ancient science of predicting the course of human destiny with the help of indications deduced from the positions and movements of heavenly bodies.* It can be best summarized up in the saying, “As above, so below”. Astrology believes that the Universe is the manifestation of ‘Divine Will and hence, is subject to interpretation. The basic premise of Astrology, therefore, is that the events in the Havens correspond to those on earth. 2.Horoscope/Birth Chart Just as a solider cannot fight without a gun, similarly an astrologer must have the horoscope or “The map of the Hour” as his chief weapon. Separate chapters have been assigned to the ‘Casting of a horoscope Zodiac hours, signs, constellations ECT. For the convenience of the readers and to facilitate exact interpretation of the birth chart. 3.sun-sign The earth revolves around the sun once in a year and it appears to make a circle of the Zodiac. The sign or constellation against which the sun appears to rise on the day of birth is called the ‘sun-sign’. In parties we often hear people telling each other, “I am a Leo, are you a Virgo?” Thus the sun-sign is the most important factor in the chart as the Sun represents the creative life force. 4.Ascendant or Rising Sign (Lagna) As the earth rotates on its axis once a day, we have the second daily cycle of the zodiac. The sign at the time of birth of an individual is called the ‘Rising Sign’ and the sunrise point itself is called the ‘Ascendant’. This is equally important in the interpretation of a horoscope. The ‘Ascendant’ further determines the division of the horoscope into twelve houses. 5.Three Broad Classifications of Astrology There are three broad classifications of astrology, viz. Natal Astrology, Mundane Astrology and Horary Astrology:(a)Natal Astrology :- Natal Astrology aims at analyzing the character of the individual and predicting his future on the basis of horoscope.(b)Mundane Astrology :- It deals with Universal phenomena such as wars, natural calamities, earthquakes, floods, famines, political turmoil and upheaval etc.(c)Horary Astrology :- It is based upon the assumption that the horoscope of any given moment can determine the meaning and significance of that moment. A question is put to an astrologer at a particular moment and he prepares the chart for that moment when the particular question is asked. He accordingly makes his predictions

Jupiter in house no .10 and 10th sign Capricorn is landlord i.e. Saturn is destroying Jupiter (e) A weak Birth chart planet in his own house in enemy ‘s sign also suffers and destroys his own house This is how the interrelationship between the houses, planets and signs is to be interpreted. But do not forget to see the aspects-friendly ands adverse-Saturn in Aries in house no. 1 is malefic if Mars occupies houses no .10 in Capricorn .Saturn will no longer remain malefic . It is a case of two bitter enemies shaking hands to avoid confrontation. Another Explanation: Sun in house no.9 is, of course, exalted but, it is aspected by Rahu from house no3.
